[Scarf my mom knit for me when I was around 5 years old]
I started my knitting journey at 5 years old when my mom taught me how to knit with some old needles and some awfully “splitty” yarn. I remember sitting on the edge of the bed trying hard to get the needles to do what I wanted them to. I thought it was fun but when I ran out of yarn I gave up on knitting until…
I was a teenager and a huge fan of the band Cheap Trick. The guitarist wore a knitted sweater with the band logo on it and I used a magnifying glass to count all the stitches and make a pattern of this sweater for myself. I found an old tattered “how to” book with a chapter on knitting to help relearn this skill I had given up on as a child. I ordered some yarn through the mail from a Mary Maxim catologue and made my first design – the sweater with the logo on it.
(Mary Maxim still sells lots of great stuff and not just for knitting – click on the link above to check it out). By the way, the Cheap Trick logo sweater took forever and I don’t even know what happened to it (oh well).
As an adult living in the middle of nowhere, I was surprised to find a LYS (local yarn shop) not too far from where I lived and my knitting journey continued. I started knitting sample items and patterns for the store – and getting paid in yarn! This shop carried some gorgeous yarns and opened up my eyes to the beautiful variety that is out there (sadly this shop is now closed down).
And the journey continues… here I am creating my own knitting designs and selling quality hand knit items and patterns, many unique and one of a kind.
