November 8, 2022 - The Crocheted Wicker Wire Basket

IMG_6319

I was looking online again and saw a contest for re-using old stuff. It was from a website that I think is just the coolest, so much so I joined it like a decade ago and even wrote a couple of  “instuctables” for the site. You may know what I’m talking about but if you don’t, you really should check out the site. It’s called Instructables and it’s super fun. It’s a “community for people who like to make things” and since I love making things it only makes sense for me to be part of this community. You should totally check it out and see the “How to Make a Tie Skirt” and “Jeannie’s Turkey Bread” instructables I’ve written…and also my latest one: “Crochet Wicker Look Wire Basket”.

So as I was saying, while looking at the site I saw this contest and I was toying with the idea of entering it. I had some old broken wired stuff lying around awaiting a trip to the dump and I thought instead of that I’d give something a whirl for this contest. As I got the wires ready though, I realized crochet was a better option for my first attempt.

So I got to it. As I worked on it I realized it kinda looked like a wicker basket. Originally, I was going to make a water-bottle sling or a bag but this wire was stiffer than I thought so I ended up with the basket idea. This is how my creative process usually works – lol – I start off with one idea and end up somewhere completely different.

I took all the pictures and wrote the instructable and published it on the site, entering it in the contest. That day it was featured on the site (the same thing happened with my “Tie Skirt” instructable). I’m really excited that they thought it was good enough to be featured.

It was tough crocheting this as I don’t do a lot of crocheting to begin with and certainly not with wire. The wire was stiff as I mentioned before and it was hurting my hands but I was so excited to get it done and get it entered in the contest that I pushed through, suffering for my art LOL.

And, the best news…. I did, in fact, win a prize for my wire wicker basket design! It was a runner up prize and I couldn’t be more pleased. If you check out the Instructables “contest” section, you’ll find my design under the Reuse challenge, along with some other pretty cool winners.

The only problem is now that I’ve won awards in two contests I’m going to be looking for more to enter…I guess you could say I’m a contest addict (LOL).

BTW, If you’re going to be doing anything with wire I highly recommend Klein Tools. I know their stuff can be expensive but it’s definitely worth it. Their wire cutters make everything so much easier. I wouldn’t want to be without them now.

So check out Instructables (my username is StickKnitting) , but be forewarned it’s a lot of fun!

And, remember no matter what happens, just Stick To The Knitting. 😊
